Norfolk is a county steeped in history, offering a wealth of historic sites and museums that tell the fascinating stories of its past. From medieval castles and grand estates to museums filled with unique artefacts, there’s something to captivate every history enthusiast. As locals who have our family home in Hindolveston (the beautiful village where our luxury glamping site is based) we’ve visited so many of the  historic sites and museums Norfolk has to offer and put together a guide of our favourites.

Originally built as a royal palace by William the Conqueror, Norwich Castle has a rich and varied history. Today, it houses the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, where you can explore a vast array of exhibits, from archaeology and natural history to fine art and decorative arts. The castle’s keep offers stunning views over the city, and the museum’s collections provide a fascinating insight into Norfolk’s heritage.

Blickling Estate

The Blickling Estate, managed by the National Trust, is a magnificent Jacobean mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland. The estate is famously linked to Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, who is believed to have been born here. The house is filled with impressive collections of furniture, paintings, and books, and the gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The estate also offers various events and activities throughout the year.

Holkham Hall

Holkham Hall is a stunning example of Palladian architecture, set within a vast estate that includes a deer park, a lake, and the beautiful Holkham Beach. The hall itself is open to the public, offering guided tours of its grand state rooms and impressive art collection. The estate also features a museum, walled garden, and a variety of walking and cycling trails, making it a great day out for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
